He was employed as a gardener, first at Osmaston Manor, before joining the staff of Lord Rosebery, afterwards working for Lord Derby at Knowsley, and later working for Lord Willoughby de Broke at Compton Verney, Warwick. Was a member of the Voluntary Aid Detachment of the Red Cross Society.
